Good Question

Luke 9:23
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

What did Jesus mean by this?

Remember he said this before crosses were considered jewelry or a good subject for a tattoo.  On church member bragging on the cross they put on the new church said, “it cost us $10,000”.  The other person said, “They used to give them away for nothing.”

  1. Does “deny self” mean something like have a bad self image and no self-esteem to use a couple of modern buzz words? Or is it to do the opposite of Peter when he denied Christ 3 times. Take up a cross, is that martyrdom, or putting up with a bad rear window defroster on your Ford Pinto? and Follow me, well, Jesus is not here where I can see him, so what is that about?

  2. another clue, keep reading the chapter. especially when the three possible followers encounter Jesus in Luk 9:57-61
Also Lk 9:51 starts the “Journey” section going into chapter 19, where Jesus is journeying toward jerusalem, what it means to follow him is discussed along the way.
