The book of Genesis ended with a lot of blessings, particularly with Jacob blessing his sons and those of Joseph.  Previously Jacob had stolen Esau’s blessing.  They obviously saw this as a very important thing.

Parents brought their children to Jesus to bless in Matthew 19:13-15

Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, [14] but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” [15] And he laid his hands on them and went away.

What is the significance of this blessing?

One author noted these points about the “family blessing”

  • Meaningful touch
  • A spoken message
  • Attaching high value to the one being blessed
  • Picturing a special future
  • An active commitment to fulfill the blessing

(“The Blessing” Smalley and Trent)

These passages suggest a very profound power that we have for the benefit of the following generation.  It might be helpful to think of who it is that may have “blessed” you in these ways, and in turn who you may give such a “blessing.”
